Founded in 2005, “The World’s Original Marmalade Awards” have become the most important contest and event worldwide on marmalades. Hosted every year during March at the historical Dalemain mansion, north England, contestants send their best citrus marmalades from all over the world, with more than 30 countries represented. The event raises thousands of pounds every year and allocates them to the local charity organization named Hospice at Home Carlisle y North Lakeland.
It’s important to emphasise the importance of this contest and its International Marmalade Festival, celebrated in north England – “International Citrus Dalemain 2019 Contest” – since both the festival and the important jury or the Committee of experts, have prestige in this English tradition. The jury members meet to talk at the historical Dalemain mansion, original palace of the fourteenth century, an outstanding area that welcomes every year the reception of the winners and the awards and medals ceremony. Where even Elisabeth Queen of England y Charles, Prince of Wales come for a visit every year to get the winning homemade marmalades.
The jury of the awards is formed by members of the prestigious London establishment “Fortnum and Mason”, company founded in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason dedicated to the sale of luxury items and gourmet food. Also, managers of important companies of homemade marmalades such as “Tiptree”, founded in 1885 and “Thursday Cottage”, with more than 50 years of experience and products available all over the world, participate as jury of the contest too.
Experts and members of jury have evaluated every homemade marmalade presented in the contest, tasting approximately 3.000 marmalades. The amber color of the marmalades, their textures, the flavor and the smell of oranges, lemons, tangerines, grapes, yuzu and other citrus fruits are evaluated with a punctuation of maximum 20 points, these 20 points give the gold medal.
The big star of the competition has been, without any doubt, the variety of bitter orange, British symbol consumed by more than half of British households, and this mode has been precisely the most valuated mode in the contest.
The awards achieved by LoRUSSo in the 2019 edition, have been the following:
- Gold medal for our homemade Bitter Orange marmalade called “Lady Bitter Orange” in the category of “Bitter Orange marmalade from Seville, with low sugar content”.

Without any doubt, the raw material is essential to obtain a high-quality standard in any final product. We want to thank the small organic farmers of Valle del Andarax in Almería, and the orchards of Seville with whom we work since they provide us with the best bitter oranges, oranges and Mediterranean mandarins. Thanks to their dedicated work and care, we have been able to achieve the category of “Superior Extra Quality” in our products. Without them it wouldn´t have been possible to have obtained these prestigious awards.
We are so happy to keep adding awards in which our work is recognized by experts of the sector. We will continue working with effort and enthusiasm to offer the best quality products.
